Thanks to the Internet we often hear miracle stories of people who went gluten-free, cut out dairy or many other foods, healed leaky gut or got rid of a gut infection and completely reversed their Hashimoto’s disease and hypothyroidism. While going through this healing process can be very challenging the truth is that most of these are the easy cases.
For most people with thyroid autoimmunity the major factors that prevent them from recovery are hidden. They are not so easy to diagnose and treat in the current standard medical care.
In my experience the most ignored and difficult to correct factor that contributes to Hashimoto’s disease, hypothyroidism and weight gain is toxicity and our body’s ability to eliminate toxins.
There are extreme forms of toxicity that can result in the acute illness and disease, but much more common in a low grade inflammation, weight gain, hormonal disruption and low energy.
Sure, you can make some changes to reduce your pesticide exposure up to 80% (here is how), start to use organic cosmetics to avoid parabens and switch to all-natural household cleaning products. In fact, doing just that will dramatically reduce your exposure to toxins.
But what can you do with an impaired ability to get rid of toxins that are already accumulated in your body and prevent you from losing weight and getting better?
My answer is detox. Doing it right can make or break your recovery.
By saying detox I don’t mean something like a Master Cleanse or Lemonade Diet which is basically a starvation diet when you drink only a mixture of lemon juice combined with maple syrup, water and cayenne pepper, a little saltwater and a laxative tea for 10 days.
The truth is that most “cleanses” and “detox programs” are fads that are dangerous to your health and can bring even more harm in the long run. The weight loss achieved on these cleanses is only temporary and is a result of starvation. It brings hormonal havoc, making fat loss impossible long-term and causing rebound weight gain putting you in a position even worse than before you started.
Many people with chronic illnesses who have tried juice fasting, colon cleansing, harsh laxatives and diets with very high amounts of fibre as a part of a detox notice that their health gets worse. But what works almost for everyone to support their natural body’s detoxification pathways are food, rest and enjoyment.
There is an effective way to detox your body that can help balance your hormones at the same time. It can also increase energy, prevent your metabolism from shutting down and stimulates your body to “release” stubborn fat.
